Domaine les Pierres Seches - Sylvain Gauthier, Saint Joseph Rouge 2021
Fresh, vibrant St Joseph that leaps from the glass. Sylvain opts for a Burgundian approach with his small 228 litre barrels in his winery. The expression of Syrah is optimised in Sylvain’s wine, opulent, expressive red and black cherries, cracked black pepper, cloves all laced together with herbal garrigue smokiness. A true delight, showing brilliantly in its youth.
17/20
‘Rich, dense layers of leathery tannins, chocolate-chestnut torta, bitter black olives, roast game and masses of dried rosemary. A yin-yang of cool elegance and compact power.’ (Tamlyn Currin of Jancisrobinson.com) Drink 2024-2034

Sylvain Gauthier is a rising star in Saint Joseph. Originally from the French Moselle, where his father had an organic vineyard, he moved to the Rhone to work at Domaine du Tunnel in Cornas and Chapoutier. In 2007 he found vineyards around Cheminas on steep granite slopes and terraces. Little by little he grew his Domaine that now tallies to 10 hectares. 7 hectares of which are in Saint Joseph appellation and 3 ha of altitude vin de pays. In 2020 he built a new cellar high up in the hills above Ozon, allowing him to be even more detailed in his work.
